Inhibitor Switch: Testing and Inspection
Inhibitor Switch (A/T)
The Inhibitor Switch is the center terminal of the 3 terminal switch. It provides a ground for the starter solenoid circuit through the selector lever only in
PARK and NEUTRAL positions.
1.
Remove the electrical connector from the switch and check for continuity between the center pin and the transmission case.
Continuity should only exist when the transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL.

Before replacing a switch that tests bad, check the gear shift linkage adjustment.
3.
Unscrew the switch from the transmission case, allowing fluid to drain into a container.
4.
Move the selector lever to PARK and then to NEUTRAL position.
Verify that the switch operating lever fingers are centered in the hole for the Inhibitor switch.
5.
Screw the switch with a new seal into the transmission case and torque to specifications, then retest the switch.

BACK-UP LIGHT SWITCH
6.
Check for continuity between the two outside pins of the switch connector, when the shift lever is in REVERSE.
Continuity should only exist when the shift lever is in REVERSE.
There should not be continuity between either outside pin and the transmission case.
