Valve Clearance: Adjustments
Jet Valve Clearance Adjustment
Fig. 8 Timing Mark Alignment. Engines W/jet Valve
Fig. 9 Measuring Jet Valve Clearance
Check torque on cylinder head bolts before performing jet valve adjustments.
1.
With engine at operating temperature, remove air cleaner assembly and spark plugs.
2.
Remove front upper timing belt cover.
3.
Remove rocker arm cover.
4.
Rotate crankshaft clockwise until cylinder No. 1 is at top dead center compression stroke. This can be done by aligning timing marks as shown,
Fig. 8.
5.
Measure jet valve clearance in locations shown by arrows, Fig. 9. Clearance should be 0.10 inch (0.25 mm) with engine hot, 0.007 inch (0.17 mm)
with engine cold.
6.
If clearance is not as specified, loosen the jet valve adjuster locknut and adjust clearance by using a feeler gauge and turning adjusting screw.
7.
Rotate crankshaft clockwise 360° so No. 4 cylinder is at top dead center compression stroke.
8.
Measure remaining jet valve clearances. If clearance is not as specified, repeat adjustment procedure outlined above.
9.
Install rocker arm cover and tighten bolts to specifications. When installing rocker cover, apply 3M sealant No. 8660 or equivalent to semi-circular
packing.
10.
Install front upper timing belt cover, spark plugs and air cleaner assembly.
