Steering Gear: Adjustments
Power Steering Gear
Steering Wheel Freeplay Check
1. With steering wheel in straight-ahead position, turn steering wheel side to side.
2. If measured value exceeds two inches, check for worn front suspension parts. If front suspension is satisfactory, check steering gear backlash.
Steering Gear Backlash Check
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Disconnect pitman arm from relay rod. Ensure steering wheel is in straight-ahead position.
3. Using dial indicator, measure steering gear backlash at pitman arm tip end.
4. If measured value exceeds limit of 0.02 inch, adjust steering gear backlash.
5. On 2WD models, adjust backlash as follows:
a. With tools loosen adjusting cover locknut.
b. Loosen or tighten adjusting cover until backlash is within specifications.
c. Hold adjusting cover, then on 1988-90 models tighten to specifications.
6. On 4WD models, adjust backlash as follows:
a. Screw in steering gearbox adjusting bolt, until steering wheel freeplay is within specifications.
