REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacement of the bearing retainer plate bolts, and if necessary replacement of the bearing retainer plate and other damaged
components.

Repair Procedure A

1.

Remove the transmission from the vehicle as described in the 1992 Rear Wheel Drive Truck Service Manual, Publication Number 81-370-2108.

2.

Replace the bearing retainer plate bolts with the four new bolts, PN 4728934, and torque to 25-27 ft.lbs. (34-37 N-m).

3.

Clean the transmission rear mounting face and the transmission rear adaptor/extension mounting face and apply a thin layer of sealant, PN
4318083.

4.

Install the rear adaptor/extension and torque the retaining bolts to 30-50 ft.lbs. (41-68 N-m).

5.

Fill the transmission with eight pints of Castrol Syntorq GL-4 lubricant, PN 4637579.

6.

Install the transmission.

Repair Procedure B

1.

Remove the transmission and completely disassemble as described in the 1992 Rear Wheel Drive Truck Service Manual, Publication Number
81-370-2108.

2.

Clean the transmission case and all of the components. Care must be taken to flush out all debris from the bearings.

3.

Inspect the rear mainshaft bearing and cup, and replace if there is any indication of spalling, brinelling, or unusual wear.

4.

Examine the 1-2 synchronizer assembly for evidence of overheating (coking or residue within the assembly), and replace as required with PN
4723007. Pay particular attention to the inhibitor springs for signs of overheating (overheating will cause the springs to lose their temper and block
1-2 gear engagement).

5.

Examine all other components and replace any that have been damaged by debris.

6.

Assemble the transmission and install the new bearing retainer plate, PN 4637784, and four new bolts, PN 4728934. Torque to 25-27 ft.lbs. (34-37
N-m).

7.

Clean the transmission rear mounting face and the transmission rear adaptor/extension mounting face and apply a thin layer of sealant, PN
4318083.

8.

Install the transmission.

9.

Install the rear adaptor/extension and torque the retaining bolts to 30-50 ft.lbs. (41-68 N-m).

10.

Fill the transmission with eight pints of Castrol Syntorq GL-4 lubricant, PN 4637579.
