SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Customer may question front seat belt function because the retractor does not lock when pulling on seat belt webbing.
The shoulder belt is designed to lock only when the vehicle stops suddenly or is in an accident (pendulum swings to engage lock). This design provides
the additional convenience of being able to extend the belt when leaning forward, etc.; therefore, the following test is required to check the retractor
locking function.
FRONT SHOULDER SEAT BELT RETRACTOR LOCK TEST
CAUTION: EXTREME CARE SHOULD BE USED IN PERFORMING THE FOLLOW ING TEST TO AVOID ANY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS
THAT COULD ARISE FROM A SUDDEN STOP. THIS TEST SHOULD BE PERFORMED IN AN EMPTY PARKING LOT ON DRY
PAVEMENT. IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED THAT THE CUSTOMER PERFORM THIS TEST.
1.
Fasten the seat belt.
2.
Grasp the shoulder belt.
3.
Accelerate vehicle to approximately 10 mph.

While performing a "panic" braking stop, pull out on the shoulder belt briskly. It is important to pull out on the belt at the same time the stop is
being made to allow the pendulum to swing forward and engage the lock.

The retractor should lock and stop the belt from being pulled out. If it doesn't, repeat the test (the vehicle must be stopped very abruptly). If the
belt still fails to lock, it must be replaced.
