Neutral Safety Switch: Description and Operation
Neutral Safety Switch
LOCATION
This switch is located in the housing of the transmission.
PURPOSE
Signals the electronic controller of gear selection.
OPERATION
On vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, the park/neutral switch indicates if the transmission is in NEUTRAL, PARK, or a DRIVE
GEAR.
Based on input from this switch the electronic controller will determine speed control strategy. If the vehicle driver shifts the transmission into
NEUTRAL while the speed control is being used, the electronic controller will disable the speed control system. If the transmission is shifted back
into a DRIVE GEAR, the speed control will have to be reset.
