Pump Gear Removal Pin Dimensions
A pin, a metric bolt and an SAE bolt are required to service the pump assembly. The pin and both bolts must be hardened. The pin can be fabricated
from drill rod or the shank of a hardened shoulder bolt. Proper bolts can be obtained from a local supplier.
As shown on the image, pin diameter should be 0.312 in (8mm) and it should be 2 in (50.8 mm) long.
The metric bolt is M14 thread, grade 10.9 The SAE bolt is 3/8 - 18 thread, grade 8.
Removal
Vacuum Pump/Power Steering Pump Assembly
NOTE:The vacuum pump/power steering pump is removed and replaced as an assembly.
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect booster vacuum hose at upper pump.
3. Disconnect fluid lines at power steering pump. Cap lines to prevent dirt entry and fluid spillage.
4. Remove bolts attaching pump assembly to block and lift assembly from engine.
5. Drain fluid from steering pump reservoir.
6. Remove gasket material from engine block and pump mounting surface.
Disassembly
1. Fabricate drive gear removal pin as described under SERVICE TOOLS.
