Fuel Heater: Testing and Inspection

Water-In-Fuel Sensor R & R

NOTE:  A defective fuel heater can cause excessive wax build-up in the fuel/water separator filter.  This wax build-up can exhibit the following
driveability symptoms:

Hard starting

^

Engine cannot reach rated rpm

^

Miss-fire under load

^

Blue or white smoke from the exhaust 

1.

Disconnect the fuel heater 2-Way electrical connector.

2.

Connect a voltmeter to the electrical connector and turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

3.

There should be at least 7 volts at the electrical connector when the temperature of the fuel is between 43 ~F and 53 ~F (6 ~C and 13.5 ~C).

If there is less than 7 volts check for a low battery, corrosion on the battery terminals, or corrosion in the wiring harness.  If there is at least 7 volts,
go to step 5.

With the electrical connector disconnected, connect an ohmmeter to the fuel heater terminals.  The ohmmeter should read 2.5 to 3.0 ohms of
resistance.  If the reading is not within specifications, replace the fuel heater.
