Fuel Shut-off Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
NOTE: The fuel solenoid does not make an easily heard "click" when activated, so it is necessary to test the solenoid by performing a functional,
ohmmeter, or voltmeter test.
FUNCTIONAL TEST
Fuel Solenoid Spring And Plunger
1.
Remove the fuel solenoid from the injection pump. See: Service and Repair
2.
Remove the spring and plunger from the solenoid and install the solenoid into the injection pump.
CAUTION: Do not connect the electrical connector to the fuel solenoid with the spring and plunger removed, because damage to the solenoid
will occur.
WARNING: With the spring and plunger removed from the fuel solenoid, the engine will start once the engine is cranked. Check that
the vehicle is in PARK or NEUTRAL and that the parking brake is set before the vehicle is started. The engine will not shut OFF when
the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position, (when the spring and plunger are removed from the fuel solenoid) so the mechanical
shut down lever on the injection pump must be used to shut the engine OFF.

If the engine STARTS with the spring and plunger removed from the fuel solenoid, perform the following ohmmeter and voltmeter tests.
OHMMETER TEST
Fuel Solenoid Testing
1.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel solenoid.
2.
Connect one lead of the ohmmeter to the electrical terminal of the fuel solenoid. Connect the other lead to good ground location on the engine.
3.
Read the ohmmeter. The resistance should be between 6.9 and 7.9 ohms.
4.
If the resistance is within specifications, go to the voltmeter test.
5.
If the resistance is not within specifications, replace the fuel solenoid.
