SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some 1989 Dodge pickups equipped with the Cummins diesel engine and automatic transmission built before MDH 02-08-89 may exhibit a knocking or
grinding noise at the rear of the engine. In some extreme cases, the noise may be accompanied with a no drive condition. This condition is the result of
cracking of the drive plate in the area of crankshaft flange.
DIAGNOSIS
Start engine. Using a stethoscope, pinpoint noise location by listening at the rear of the engine and torque converter housing. If the noise is located in the
torque converter housing area, perform the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure involves the removal of the transmission and replacement of the torque converter drive plate.

Remove the transmission and torque converter per the procedure outlined on page 21-75 in the 1989 RearWheel-Drive Truck Service Manual,
Publication No. 81- 370-9008.
