NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A NV4500 MANUAL TRANSMISSION.
MODELS:
1992 (AD) Ram Pickup/Ram Cab & Chassis
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Vehicles equipped with a NV4500 manual transmission may exhibit one or more of the following symptoms:

Third gear jump-out when accelerating (any speed range).
-
Second gear clash.
-
First and second gear block-out.
These symptoms are caused by the mainshaft bearing plate retaining screws loosening and allowing the retaining plate and mainshaft to move rearward.
DIAGNOSIS:
1.
Drain the transmission oil.
2.
Remove the transmission rear adaptor/extension as described in the 1992 Rear Wheel Drive Truck Service Manual, Publication Number
81-370-2108.
3.
Examine the mainshaft bearing retaining bolts.
A.
If the bolts are tight, or have not backed out far enough to allow mainshaft bearing retainer to contact the countershaft fifth gear, and no
chipping or debris is evident, proceed to repair procedure A.
B.
If first and second gear blockout is a problem or if the retainer has backed out far enough to contact the countershaft fifth gear, and shavings
or debris is evident, proceed to repair procedure B.
