Ball Stud: Service and Repair
2 WHEEL DRIVE MODELS
1. Place a suitable jack under outer end of lower control arm, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Remove caliper from disc and position disc aside, then remove inboard shoe. Do not allow caliper to hang or be supported by hydraulic
brake hose.
5. Disconnect tie rod end at steering knuckle arm.
6. Disconnect upper and lower ball joints from steering knuckle assembly, using tool No. C-3564-A.
7. Remove tool, then the steering knuckle assembly.
8. Remove splash shield and steering knuckle arm from steering knuckle.
9. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Torque splash shield to steering knuckle attaching bolts to 220 ft. lbs. and steering knuckle arm attaching bolts to 217 ft. lbs.
b. Torque ball joint nuts to 135 ft. lbs.
c. Torque tie rod end attaching nut to 40 ft.
4 WHEEL DRIVE MODELS
1. Remove cotter pin, locknut and spring washer from wheel hub.
2. While applying brakes, loosen hub nut.
3. Raise and support vehicle with front suspension in full rebound.
4. Remove hub nut and washer, then wheel and tire assembly.
5. Remove brake caliper and suspend aside with suitable wire or string. Do not allow caliper to hang from hydraulic hose.
6. Remove rotor, then the hub and bearing assembly attaching bolts and hub and bearing assembly.
7. Disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle.
8. Separate steering knuckle from ball joints, then remove steering knuckle.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque upper ball joint nut to 135 ft. lbs. and lower ball joint nut to 120 ft. lbs.
b. Torque hub and bearing assembly attaching bolts to 110 ft. lbs.
c. Torque tie rod end attaching nut to 40 ft. lbs.
d. Torque hub nut to 180 ft. lbs.
e. Lower vehicle to ground, then adjust torsion bars to set ride height. Refer to "Front Suspension Height, Adjust" for procedure.
