Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

Rear Main Oil Seal Leak Repair

The following procedure is used to repair a leaking (rotated) rear main oil seal. Do not remove upper half of rope oil seal during this procedure.

1.

Remove oil pan, pump and rear main bearing cap.

2.

Remove lower rope seal half from bearing cap.

3.

Install a new lower seal half into bearing cap. Tap seal down into position using seal installation tool No. C-3511 or equivalent and cut the right
bank seal end flush with the bearing cap. Remove the rope seal, rotate (end-for-end), and reinstall seal into cap with cut end protruding above the
surface so as to tightly fill the block half seal end compressed above the block/cap parting line.

4.

Press in rope seal into cap using tool C-3511 or equivalent, and cut left bank side flush with cap surface.

5.

Lightly oil the lower seal half with clean engine oil and install side seals. Ensure side seal identified with yellow paint is used on the right side.

6.

Install rear bearing cap.

7.

Install main bearing cap, oil pump and oil pan.
