SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some vehicles equipped with the 3.9L engine and A-500 transmission may exhibit a "Beat/Boom" vibration in the cab. This vibration occurs when the
torque converter locks-up at approximately 47 MPH during normal acceleration. The vibration period may remain at its peak up to 52 MPH. This
condition may be the result of a normal powertrain torsional vibration exited by torque converter lock-up.
DIAGNOSIS
Connect the DRBII, select the "Engine Speed" screen under Read Sensor Values. Road test the vehicle, performing four to five 0 to 55 MPH normal
accelerations. Observe the MPH and RPM the vibration begins and ends. If the vibration occurs between 45 and 50 MPH, and the vibration begins when
the RPM drops 50 to 150 RPMs (this RPM drop indicates torque converter lock-up) perform the following repair procedure.
If the vibration occurs at speeds below torque converter lock-up or above 52 MPH, check for other possible sources of the vibration such as wheels and
tires, U-joints, or engine mounts, etc.
