EGR Control Valve: Description and Operation

Solenoid Trio

Vacuum for the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is controlled by the EGR solenoid.  The solenoid, located on the right valve cover on the engine,
is controlled by the engine controller.  The engine controller controls this solenoid by applying or removing its ground from the circuit.  The solenoid is
ENERGIZED if the engine controller applies the ground, and the solenoid is DE-ENERGIZED if the engine controller removes the ground.
  
When the engine controller ENERGIZES the solenoid, vacuum is not allowed to flow to the EGR valve and transducer.  The solenoid is ENERGIZED
during engine warm-up, idle (closed throttle), wide open throttle, and rapid deceleration/acceleration. 
 
NOTE:  Since the vacuum signal is halted with solenoid activation, driveability problems will occur if the solenoid is disconnected.

On California vehicles the engine controller monitors EGR system operation and sets a fault code if the system performance is unsatisfactory.  If a fault
is found, the CHECK ENGINE light will be illuminated, indicating a need for vehicle service.
