SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Customer "no heat" complaints on subject vehicles equipped with A/C, 2.2 liter carburetor, electronic fuel injection, or turbo engines may be caused by a
defective 4-port water valve, either PN 3848307, 3848136, 3848729, or 3848460. Diagnosis is as follows:

DIAGNOSIS

NOTE:

CHECK THERMOSTAT AND INSPECT WATER VALVE PER THE 1984 FRONT WHEEL DRIVE SERVICE MANUAL
BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE.

1.

Push the "Off" button on the instrument panel with engine running, and note whether or not the arm on the vacuum actuator on the water valve is
pulled in. If it does not pull in, verify that there is vacuum to the valve by pulling off the vacuum hose. If there is vacuum at the water valve and the
valve does not pull in, the valve is defective and should be replaced. If there is no vacuum, consult service manual for system testing.

2.

Push the "Heat" button on the instrument panel with engine running, and note whether or not the spring in the the vacuum actuator on the water
valve forces the arm out. If the arm stays in, the valve is defective and should be replaced.
