Fuel Gauge: Testing and Inspection

Fuel Gauge System Diagnosis Chart

1.

Turn the ignition switch ON.

2.

Disconnect the fuel sending unit connector at the fuel tank and momentarily ground the lead wire.

If the fuel gauge swings to the FULL position, the wiring and gauge are operating properly. Test the fuel sending unit.

3.

If the gauge doesn't move, remove the fuel gauge from the dash and check wiring continuity between the fuel gauge and the fuel sending unit
connector.

If there is no continuity, repair open in the wiring.

4.

Check power and ground feeds at the fuel gauge.

If power or ground feeds are not present at the fuel gauge, repair open in wiring.

6.

If power, ground, sending unit and wiring are all OK, and the fuel gauge still doesn't work, replace the fuel gauge.
