Body Controller: Description and Operation
Functional Operation
Body Controller
There are two body controllers available in 1992: the "base" controller and the "premium" body controllers. The vehicle has a "premium" controller
when equipped with an electronic instrument cluster or EVIC panel monitor. Otherwise, it has a "base" body controller.
The body controller provides power or ground for a variety of systems. It uses a voltage drop to monitor these systems.
The body controller is the only module that has the capability of providing both bias and termination on the CCD bus system.
The body controller receives information from the engine node about brake fluid level, engine coolant level, and engine oil level.
The body controller is used to store odometer information displayed in the electronic instrument cluster (see the "Electronic Instrument Cluster"
description in this section).
Compass/Temperature Monitor
The Compass/Temperature monitor is located in the overhead console. This dual function display provides a digital readout of the outside temperature
and eight primary compass readings to indicate the direction in which the vehicle is facing.
A "COMP/TEMP" switch, located left of the display module, turns the display on or off.
A "US/MET" switch, located right of the display module, cycles the temperature display From degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius.
The compass/mini-trip module is self-calibrated and requires no adjustment. The word "CAL" will be displayed to indicate that the compass is in the
fast calibrating mode. "CAL" will turn off after the vehicle has gone in three complete circles without stopping, in an area free of magnetic disturbance.
If the module displays the temperature while the compass is blank, the vehicle must be demagnetized. See Compass for the proper procedure.
If the compass still goes blank after the vehicle is demagnetized, the compass/mini-trip module must be replaced.
VARIANCE
Variance is the difference between magnetic north and geographic north. To determine the variance for the area you are in, refer to the zone map
provided here. The number shown for your area is the variance number for your area.
To Set the Variance: turn the ignition switch ON, depress and hold the "COMP/TEMP" button, then depress and hold the "US/M" button for
approximately five seconds. The "VAR" symbol will be displayed and all other symbols will be off. Release the buttons.
Consult the map to determine the variance number for your geographic location. Depress and release the "US/M" button until your variance
number appears on the display, then press the "COMP/TEMP" button. The display will go blank, then reappear after approximately five seconds
and be functioning normally.
