SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some 41TE transaxles built in the 1992 and 1993 model year and 42LE transaxles built in the 1993 model year may experience a whistling noise. This
condition may occur when the gear selector is in park, neutral, or overdrive position at idle after reaching operating temperature. This noise is similar to
a high pitched hydraulic noise or vacuum leak.
DIAGNOSIS:
1.
With the vehicle in a quiet area and drivetrain at normal operating temperature, fully apply the parking brake, then apply the service brakes with
your left foot.
2.
Place the gear shift selector in overdrive.
3.
Roll the driver side window down.
4.
Carefully listen for the high pitched whistle at idle.
5.
If the whistling noise is heard, slowly raise the engine speed to 1200-1500 RPM while the transmission is in overdrive and brakes applied. The
whistling noise should disappear at 1200-1500 RPM.
6.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 to confirm the whistle noise.
7.
If the whistle persists at 1200-1500 RPM, the problem is not a transmission whistle and this bulletin does not apply.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves replacing the regulator valve and separator plate of the transaxle valve body.
1.
Remove the valve body using the procedure in the appropriate technical service manual.
2.
Remove the regulator valve and replace it with the revised valve (PN 4659081).
3.
Remove the separator plate and replace it with the revised plate (PN 4659082 for 41TE applications or PN 4659083 for 42LE applications).
4.
Reinstall the valve body.
