Axle Bearing: Service and Repair
Bolt-In Type

NOTE:  If there is movement noted on one or both wheels but no bearing noise, measure movement at wheel outer rim diameter with a dial gauge. The
maximum allowable movement on a 13 inch wheel at the rim lip is 0.020 inch, on a 14 inch wheel 0.023 inch and 0.025 inch on a 15 inch wheel. Do not
replace bearings for looseness if movement is as specified. Also do not over torque the axle retaining nut beyond 180 lb-ft, to minimize bearing freeplay.
NOTE:  Service procedures that involve hub removal require a new hub bearing be installed.

NOTE:  Some models use a bolt-in type hub and bearing assembly. This unit is serviced as a complete assembly and is attached to the steering knuckle
by four mounting screws that are removed from the rear of the steering knuckle.

1. Remove steering knuckle, refer to Steering and Suspension/Steering/Steering Knuckle/Service and Repair. 
2. Remove four hub and bearing assembly attaching screws from rear of steering knuckle.
3. Remove hub and bearing assembly. 

NOTE:  Replacement of grease seal is recommended whenever this service is performed.

4. Install new hub and bearing assembly in steering knuckle and torque screws in a cross pattern to specification. 

NOTE:  Knuckle and bearing mounting surfaces must be smooth and free of foreign material and nicks.

5. Install new seal using seal installer tool No. C-4698 or equivalent.

NOTE:  During any service procedures where knuckle and driveshaft are separated, clean seal and wear sleeve, then lubricate full circumference
of seal and wear sleeve with MOPAR Multi-Purpose Lubricant, part No. 4318063 or equivalent, as shown.

6. Install steering knuckle, refer to STEERING SUSPENSION CHASSIS AND BODY COMPONENTS/FRONT

SUSPENSION/COMPONENT R&R PROCEDURES/STEERING KNUCKLE.
