The intake manifold attaching bolts on some engines are tilted upward about 30 degrees at an angle to the manifold-to-cylinder head gasket face. The
purpose of this design is to provide more effective sealing at the cylinder block end gaskets. If the intake manifold is removed the installation should
be such that the bolt tightening is done evenly and in the sequence shown in Fig. 2.

With gaskets in place start all bolts, leaving them loose. Run bolts 1 through 4 down so the heads just touch manifold. Then tighten these four bolts to
25 ft. lbs. torque. After checking to see that gaskets are properly seated at all surfaces, tighten remaining bolts to 25 ft. lbs. Finally tighten all bolts in
the sequence shown to specifications.

1. Drain cooling system and disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove alternator, carburetor air cleaner and fuel line. Disconnect accelerator linkage.
3. Remove vacuum advance hose and distributor cap and wires.
4. Disconnect coil wires, heat indicator wire, heater and bypass hoses.
5. Remove closed ventilation system and rocker arm covers.
6. Remove intake manifold, coil and carburetor as an assembly.
7. Remove exhaust manifolds.
8. Remove rocker arm and shaft assemblies. Remove pushrods. During disassembly note location of pushrods so they can be installed in the

same position.

9. Remove head bolts and cylinder heads.

10. Reverse procedure to install heads and tighten bolts in sequence, Fig. 3. V8-318 engines have cylinder head bolt holes drilled through the block

into the water jacket in certain locations, Fig. 4. Cylinder head bolts in these locations must have sealer 4057989 or equivalent applied to the
threads to prevent engine coolant leakage. Ensure old sealer is cleaned from the threads before applying new sealer.
