Water Pump: Service and Repair

When it becomes necessary to remove a fan clutch of the silicone type, the assembly must be supported in the vertical position to prevent
leaks of silicone fluid from the clutch mechanism. This loss of fluid will render the fan clutch inoperative.

1. Drain cooling system, then remove battery, upper and lower radiator hoses and fan shroud.
2. Remove all drive belts, then remove fan attaching bolts, fan, spacer and pulley.
3. Remove A/C compressor and air pump bracket to water pump attaching bolts, then position compressor and air pump aside. Keep compressor in

upright position.

4. Disconnect bypass and heater hoses from water pump.
5. Remove water pump attaching bolts and remove pump assembly.
6. Reverse procedure to install.

1. Drain cooling system and disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove all drive belts, then remove radiator shroud and position over fan.
3. Remove fan assembly, pulley and fan shroud.
4. Remove alternator adjusting strap and mounting bolts and position alternator aside.
5. Remove A/C compressor with mounting brackets and position aside, if equipped. Keep compressor in upright position.
6. Remove power steering pump mounting bolts and position pump aside, if equipped.
7. Remove air pump and mounting brackets, if equipped. Disconnect air hose at pump fittings.
8. Disconnect bypass and heater hoses at water pump.
9. Disconnect lower radiator hose from pump.

10. Remove remaining water pump attaching bolts and remove pump assembly.
11. Reverse procedure to install.

When replacing a cup-type core hole plug in an engine, the size of the hole in the cylinder head, water jacket or rear bearing bore for the 
camshaft should be checked. At these locations, a 1/16 inch oversize hole is sometimes bored in production and an oversize core plug
installed. Core plugs 1/16 inch oversize are available for replacement should they be required at these locations.
