Electric Power Steering (EPS) System
ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) SYSTEM
Power assist is provided by the EPS pump mounted to the Power Distribution Center (PDC). The EPS pump is an electrically operated hydraulic pump
which supplies variable hydraulic fluid flow and pressure to the steering gear. The EPS pump replaces the conventional belted power steering pump and
draws power from the 12V electrical system instead of the engine, reducing engine load. The EPS pump has an EPS module attached (not replaceable
separately) for information processing and pump control for power steering assist. The EPS module monitors the vehicle Controller Area Network
(CAN) communication system using information including vehicle speed, steering angle, and steering rate to calculate the steering assist required. The
EPS Module does contain diagnostic functions. For descriptions and procedures related to DTCs See: Testing and Inspection. There are two electrical
connectors on the EPS pump assembly. One connector is a 12V low amperage module connector, and the other is a 12V higher amperage (up to 98
amps) pump connector containing a larger gauge wire for motor operation. The power steering hoses and steering gear are substantially unchanged in
function from a conventional system. However, there are unique components for this system, such as hoses for routing and the gear for valve tuning. This
system requires no cooling system but it does monitor internal motor/fluid temperature.

NOTE: There is no internal service of the EPS pump. Replace the EPS pump as an assembly, including the reservoir, brackets and pressure
hose extension.
The EPS pump replaces the conventional belt-driven power steering pump and draws its power from the 12V electrical system instead of the engine
crankshaft reducing engine load.
The EPS pump mounts to bottom of PDC bracket with 2 studs and 1 bolt. Removal from the vehicle is possible through left front wheel opening after
removing fender liner.
