Hybrid Power Control Module: Testing and Inspection
TPIM - PRE-DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURE
For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information See: Diagrams/Electrical Diagrams.
WARNING: On vehicles equipped with the high voltage system, you must thoroughly read and follow all High Voltage Safety procedures. In
addition, before performing any diagnostic or service procedure near a high voltage component, you must perform the High
Voltage Power Down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury See: Battery System, Hybrid
Drive/Service Precautions
Perform the following steps prior to any diagnostic procedure(s).
1. Check the Service Disconnect for proper installation. Some DTCs may set as a result of a removed or improperly installed Service Disconnect.
2. Only perform testing with the 12 volt battery fully charged to avoid false diagnosis.
3. Refer to applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for controller software update information. Some conditions can be corrected by upgrading
the Traction Power Inverter Module (TPIM) controller software.
4. Check for Service Information Tune-ups or Service Bulletins for any possible causes that may apply.
5. With the scan tool, perform the Vehicle Scan Report and record the results.
6. Read DTCs record the corresponding DTC Environmental Data. Use this data to identify the conditions in which the DTC was set.
NOTE: Address active DTCs in the correct order.
As a general rule, for any control module that exhibits more than one active DTC, address the codes in the order indicated:
-
Low/High Voltage and CAN Bus Loss of Communication Codes.
-
Module Internal Failure and Configuration Mismatch Codes.
-
Circuit specific DTC failures.
7. Refer to the When Monitored and Set Conditions for this DTC. DTCs can set at ignition on, at start up, driving under specific conditions, and after
controller diagnostic monitors have run.
8. If the malfunction is still present after conducting this Pre-diagnostic Procedure, continue to the appropriate DTC procedure or symptom
diagnostic.
Did any of the above procedures repair the vehicle?
Yes
-
Testing is complete.
-
Perform the TPIM VERIFICATION TEST . See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Diagnostic
Trouble Code Tests and Associated Procedures/Verification Tests/Traction Power Inverter Module (TPIM) Verification Test
No
-
Perform the appropriate Hybrid Control Processor (HCP) diagnostic procedure(s).
