Steering - Clicking Sound Heard From Upper Column
NUMBER: 19-011-01
GROUP: Steering
DATE: Dec. 14, 2001
SUBJECT:
Clicking Sound In The Steering Column/Intermediate Shaft
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves lubricating the intermediate shaft flex coupling.
MODELS:
2002 (DN) Durango
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A clicking sound may be present which could sound like it is coming from the upper steering column or clock spring. This sound can easily be
mis-diagnosed as a clock spring or steering column problem but could be caused by friction in the intermediate shaft coupler joint.
DIAGNOSIS/REPAIR PROCEDURE:
Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel back and forth. If the condition is present, lubricate the intermediate shaft coupler flex joint by applying a
coating of MOPAR Spray White Lube (Lithium Grease), p/n 04318066 or equivalent to the flex joint. (Fig. 1) Work the grease into the joint by moving
the steering wheel back and forth. If this does not eliminate the sound, further steering column diagnosis will be required.
