Rear Disc Brakes - Premature Lining Wear
NO: 05-10-94
GROUP: Brakes
EFFECTIVE DATE: Jun. 3, 1994
SUBJECT:
Rear Brake Lining Wear and Revised Caliper Service
MODELS:
1988 - 1990 (C) (AC)
Dynasty/New Yorker
Symptom/Condition
Rear disc brake linings wear out prematurely or one wheel's brake linings wear out before the other.
Diagnosis
With the vehicle on an appropriate hoist, check the rear wheels for brake drag. The wheels should rotate freely. If the wheels do not rotate freely, apply
and release the parking brake several times. Inspect the parking brake cables for freedom of movement and complete release of parking brake apply
forces. If the movement of the parking brake cable(s) is restricted, perform repair PROCEDURE A.
Inspect the rear brake linings for wear. If right and left wheel brake linings are worn approximately the same, follow normal rear brake shoe replacement
procedures as outlined in the appropriate Service Manual. If the wear of the right and left wheel brake linings differ significantly, manually pull the
wheel caliper with the linings that have the most wear toward the outside of the vehicle so the caliper piston will be retracted. If the caliper piston does
not retract, perform repair PROCEDURE B. If the caliper does move freely, follow normal rear brake shoe replacement procedures as outlined in the
appropriate Service Manual.
Repair Procedure
This bulletin involves replacing parking brake cable(s) and/or repairing rear wheel caliper assembly(s).
Procedure A
1.
Using the procedure outlined in the appropriate Service Manual, replace all parking brake cables that do not move freely.
Procedure B
1.
Release the parking brake. Pump the service brake pedal several times.
2.
Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist and remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies.
