Shift Linkage: Adjustments

When linkage cable must be disconnected from levers which use plastic grommets as retainers, the grommets must be replaced.
1.
Place selector lever into ``P'' position.
2.
Loosen clamp bolt on gearshift cable bracket.
3.
On column shift models, ensure preload adjustment spring engages fork on transaxle bracket.
4.
Pull shift lever, Fig. 2 to front detent (Park) position and torque locknut to 100 inch lbs. Shift linkage should now be properly adjusted.
5.
Check adjustment as follows:
a.
Detent position for neutral and drive should be within limits of hand lever gate stops.
b.
Key start must occur only when shift lever is in park or neutral positions.
6.
On some models, it may be necessary to remove console to adjust linkage.
