SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Delayed initial engagement into drive or reverse, primarily on vehicles equipped with air-to-oil transaxle coolers generally fall into one of the following
categories.
1.
An unacceptable delay of five (5) or more seconds occurs, before engagement is felt, when the transaxle is shifted into drive or reverse, generally
after the vehicle has been parked for an hour or more.
NOTE:
PRESENCE OF METALLIC DEBRIS IN PAN OR FILTER INDICATES AN INTERNAL TRANSAXLE FAILURE, REQUIRING
TRANSAXLE REMOVAL AND REPAIR.
2.
When the accelerator is depressed following a shift into drive or reverse, the engine races before engagement occurs, and the engagement is
unusually harsh.
3.
When the transaxle is shifted into drive or reverse, and the vehicle begins to move, the acceleration is poor initially and the impression of slipping
is felt.
DIAGNOSIS

Check the automatic transmission fluid level and condition, if the fluid level is extremely low, this is the probable cause of the complaint.
Correction of the fluid level should correct the condition.

Check and, if necessary, adjust throttle cable and shift cable.

Connect hydraulic pressure gauges and check front pump pressure.
Because this condition may not occur consistently, verification of the complaint is difficult. However, if the complaint fits the symptoms noted above,
proceed with the repair procedure.
