The cause of the blockout condition into reverse is excess stock at the base of the reverse step (gear) pointing, Figure 1. This extra material
prevents the reverse idler from indexing with the reverse step on the 3rd. and 4th. Clutch sleeve and reverse gear.
NOTE:
IF THE SHIFT LEVER MOVED INTO REVERSE MORE THAN SEVEN TIMES OUT OF TEN AND REVERSE ENGAGEMENT
IS ACCOMPANIED BY "GEAR GRINDING" NOISE, THEN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CONDITION EXISTS, REFER TO
"GEAR CLASH IN REVERSE", OR "EXCESSIVE CLUTCH SPIN TIME", IN THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure involves the removal and disassembly of the transaxle to replace the 3rd. and 4th. clutch sleeve and reverse gear.
1.
Use appropriate Service Manual to remove and disassemble the transaxle.
2.
Replace the 3rd. and 4th. clutch sleeve and reverse gear with PN 4377803.
3.
Assemble and install the transaxle and verify that the reverse shift is functioning properly.
