Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
Brake Shoe Removal and Installation
Removal
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove rear wheels.
2. Remove drum retaining nuts if equipped, then the drums. If drum will not separate from brake shoes or axle, proceed as follows:
a. Ensure parking brake is disengaged.
b. Remove adjuster hole plug from backing plate.
Rear Brake Assembly.
c. Insert small screwdriver or equivalent, through adjuster hole, then push and hold self adjuster lever off adjuster screw assembly.
d. Using a suitable brake adjuster tool back off adjuster screw assembly until drum is free of shoes.
e. If drum is rusted to axle flange, use a suitable hammer to tap on drum and flange area until drum is free.
3. Pull back front park brake cable to release tension in self adjusting parking brake system.
4. Place suitable locking pliers onto cable to maintain slack in system. Place pliers at rear body outrigger bracket only.
5. Remove adjustment lever spring, then the adjustment lever.
6. Remove lower brake shoe to brake shoe spring.
7. Remove tension clip from upper spring and automatic adjuster assembly. Note position of tension clip for assembly reference.
8. Remove upper brake shoe to brake shoe spring.
9. Remove trailing brake shoe hold-down spring clip and pin.
10. Lift out trailing brake shoe and disconnect park brake arm, then remove park brake strut.
11. Remove automatic adjuster screw assembly.
12. Remove leading brake shoe hold-down spring clip and pin.
