Air Bag: Description and Operation
Side Curtain Airbag
Description
DESCRIPTION
Side curtain airbags are standard factory installed equipment in this vehicle for all markets except Mexico. These airbags are passive, inflatable,
Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) components, and vehicles with this equipment can be readily identified by a molded identification trim button with
the SRS - AIRBAG logo located near the top of each upper B-pillar and C-pillar trim. This system is designed to reduce injuries to the vehicle
occupants in the event of a side impact collision or a vehicle rollover incident.
Vehicles equipped with side curtain airbags have two individually controlled curtain airbag units (1). These airbag units are concealed and mounted
above the headliner where they are each secured to one of the roof side rails. Each folded airbag cushion is contained within a extruded plastic channels
and a fabric wrap that extends along the roof rail from the A-pillar at the front of the vehicle to the D-pillar at the rear of the vehicle.
Two plastic retainer clips secure a long tether (5) to the inside of the A-pillar downward from the front of the airbag cushion, where it is retained to a slot
in the base of the A-pillar near the belt line with a metal hook followed by a plastic push-in retainer to secure the hook in the slot. Two additional plastic
retainer clips secure another short tether (3) at the rear of the cushion down the D-pillar where it is retained by a similar hook and plastic push-in retainer
arrangement to a slot located near the belt line of the D-pillar.
The hybrid-type inflator (2) for each airbag is secured to the airbag unit above the sliding door opening and is mounted to a pair of weld studs on a
stamped metal bracket located on the roof rail between the B-pillar and the C-pillar. The inflator is connected to the airbag cushion by a tubular
manifold. The entire assembly is secured to weld studs spaced along the inside of the roof rail with nuts.
A take out and connector of the body wire harness is routed up each B-pillar and rearward along the roof rail to the connector receptacle of the initiator
(4) at the rear of the airbag inflator. This connects the airbag unit to the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC).
The side curtain airbag unit cannot be adjusted or repaired and must be replaced if deployed, ineffective, or in any way damaged. Once a side curtain
airbag has been deployed, the complete airbag unit, the headliner, the upper A, B, C and D-pillar trim, and all other visibly damaged components must be
replaced.
