Fuel Tank - Thud or Thump Noise

SUBJECT:

"Thud/Thump" Sound When
Accelerating From A Stop
and/or When Stopping Quickly

MODELS:

1996 - 1997 (NS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager
1996 - 1997 (GS) Chrysler Voyager (European Market)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A "thud/thump" sound can be heard during acceleration from a stop and/or during quick stops when the fuel gauge is indicating between 1/2 and Full.
The "thud/thump" sound may be accompanied by a pronounced "feel" of the fluid motion in the fuel tank.

DIAGNOSIS:

Accelerate the vehicle from a stop and listen for a "thud/thump" sound with the fuel tank between 1A and Full. Stop the vehicle quickly and listen for a
"thud/thump" sound with the fuel tank between 1/2 and Full. If a "thud/thump" sound is heard and/or felt while accelerating or stopping perform the
Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves installing 2 molded foam pads between the vehicle body and the fuel tank, and installing spacers between the fuel tank retaining
straps and the vehicle body at the attaching bolts.

NOTE:

THIS REPAIR PROCEDURE WILL REDUCE THE "THUD/THUMP" SOUND AND FEEL ON A MAJORITY OF VEHICLES, BUT WILL
NOT BE EFFECTIVE IN ALL CASES.

1.

Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.

2.

Support the fuel tank with a transmission jack. Loosen the front fuel tank retaining strap bolts. Remove the rear fuel tank retaining strap bolts and
lower the fuel tank slightly.

3.

Position the rear pad on the rear top of the fuel tank. The pad is molded to fit the shape of the tank.

NOTE:

BE SURE THE PAD IS INSTALLED OVER (NOT UNDER) THE ROLL OVER VALVE LINES.

4.

Raise the fuel tank slowly back into position.

5.

Install the rear fuel tank retaining strap, placing one spacer (P/N 4886214AA) between the strap and body at each bolt attaching point. Loosely
install the bolts.

6.

Remove the front fuel tank retaining strap bolts and lower the fuel tank slightly.

7.

Position the front pad on the front top of the fuel tank. The pad is molded to fit the shape of the tank.

NOTE:

BE SURE THE PAD IS NOT POSITIONED BETWEEN THE FUEL TANK AND THE UNDER BODY CROSSMEMBER DURING
