Fuel Reservoir: Description and Operation
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
Fuel Pump Assembly
CAUTION: The fuel delivery system is under constant pressure, and fuel pressure must be released prior to servicing the fuel pump.
Fuel Pump Module
The fuel pump module contains the fuel pump, check valves, level unit and reservoir body.
Fuel Pump
Voltage to the fuel pump is supplied through the fuel pump relay.
Maximum fuel pump output pressure is approximately 930 kPa (135 psi).
Fuel is drawn into the pump through an inlet strainer (sock style filter), mounted on the pump inlet tube. The inlet strainer removes any larger
impurities before the fuel enters the pump.
Check Valves
First check valve is used to relieve internal fuel pump pressure and regulate maximum pump output.
The other check valve, mounted in the fuel return line, restricts fuel movement in the reverse direction when the pump is not operating.
Level Unit
Attached to the side of the fuel pump assembly.
Consists of a float, an arm, and a variable resistor.
As the fuel level increases, the float and arm move up. This decreases the sending unit resistance, causing the fuel gauge on the instrument panel to
read full.
Reservoir Body
The reservoir body replaces an internal fuel tank reservoir. The reservoir provides fuel at the pump intake during all driving conditions, especially
those when low fuel levels are present.
