NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLE BUILT WITH 3.8L ENGINES BUILT BETWEEN AUGUST 1, 1996 AND SEPTEMBER 30, 1996
MDH (08-01-XX & 09-30-XX) WITH ENGINE BUILD CODES OF 208 TO 265.
The engine code is a 14 position code located on a white bar code label affixed to the front face of the front valve cover (Figure 1). The date is the 6th,
7th, and 8th position of the 14 position code.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A vibration that is felt in the floor pan, seat and/or steering wheel in idle drive and/or neutral. This vibration may be interpreted as an engine miss.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) or the Diagnostic Scan Tool (DRB III) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures Manual, verify all
engine/transmission systems are functioning as designed. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are present, record them on the repair order and repair as
necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.
1.
Apply the parking and service brake, start the vehicle and place the transaxle in reverse.
2.
Bring the engine to 1400 rpm against the torque convertor while feeling for the vibration condition in the seat, floor pan and/or steering wheel.
3.
If an objectionable vibration is felt proceed to the next step of this diagnosis.
4.
Shut the engine off and rotate the engine so the number 1 piston is at top dead center.
NOTE:
NUMBER 1 AND NUMBER 4 COME TO TOP DEAD CENTER AT THE SAME TIME.
5.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist and remove the right engine splash shield to gain access to the crankshaft damper.
