Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Disarm airbag as outlined under "Precautions."
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Lock steering column by turning steering wheel 1/2 turn (180°) clockwise from the straight ahead position.
4. Place ignition in the Off/Lock position and remove ignition key. This will ensure no damage occurs to the clockspring.
5. Remove speed control switches from steering wheel to gain access to airbag module attaching screws. If vehicle is not equipped with speed

control, pry out covers on sides of steering wheel for access.

6. Remove bolts attaching airbag module to steering wheel.
7. Lift airbag module from steering wheel, disconnecting wiring harness connections from rear of airbag module and remove module from steering

wheel.

8. Remove steering wheel retaining nut from steering column shaft.
9. Remove steering wheel using steering wheel puller tool No. C-3428-B or equivalent.

INSTALLATION

1. Align splines on steering wheel and steering column then install steering on column routing wiring through steering wheel as shown.
2. Install steering wheel retaining nut and tighten nut to draw steering wheel onto column. Torque steering column shaft nut to 45 ft-lbs.
3. Connect wiring harness on airbag module.
4. Install airbag module into steering wheel using care not to pinch any wires.
5. Install airbag retaining bolts, and center airbag module and torque airbag module to 8 ft-lbs.
6. Connect speed control switches then install switches on steering wheel. If vehicle is not equipped with speed control, install speed control switch

covers.

7. Rearm airbag as outlined under "Precautions."
