Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair
Rear Cable Replacement

NOTE:  This procedure can be used to remove and install either rear park brake cable.

REMOVE 

Raise vehicle using a frame contact type hoist or correctly jack and support the vehicle using jack stands.

1. Loose the park brake cable tensioner nut until tension is removed from cables.
2. Left rear cable only: Remove the rear cable from the connector at the park brake cable tensioner.
3. Right rear cable only: Remove the rear cable from the connector at the intermediate cable.

4. Remove the retainer clip securing the preferred rear park brake cable to the crossmember.
5. Lower the vehicle enough to have rear brakes at good working height.
6. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly from the side of the vehicle requiring service to the park brake cable.
7. Remove the rear disc brake caliper from the adapter and rotor.
8. Remove the rear brake rotor from the rear hub/ bearing assembly.
9. Remove the park brake shoes from the disc brake adapter.

10. Remove the park brake actuator lever from the rear park brake cable.
11. Using a screwdriver, carefully compress the retainer tabs securing the rear park brake cable to the disc brake adapter.
12. Remove the rear park brake cable from the disc brake adapter and vehicle.

INSTALL 

1. Install the rear parking brake cable by routing the leading end above the intermediate cable, then, between the frame, crossmember, and stabilizer

bar.

2. Install the other end of the cable into the disc brake adapter, allowing the retainer tabs to lock into place in the adapter.
3. Install the park brake actuator lever onto the end of the rear park brake cable behind the spring.
4. Reinstall the park brake shoes.
5. Reinstall the rear disc brake rotor on the hub/bearing.
6. Reinstall the brake caliper on the rotor and adapter.
7. Install the caliper guide pin bolts and tighten to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
8. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
9. Raise the vehicle back up.

10. Install the rear park brake cable into the rear suspension crossmember mounting hole.
11. Install a new retainer clip, on the end of the cable housing, to secure it in place.
12. Left rear cable only: Connect the left rear park brake cable to the connector on the park brake cable tensioner.
13. Right rear cable only: Connect the right rear park brake cable to the connector on the intermediate park brake cable.
14. When repairs are complete, adjust parking brake shoes before adjusting parking brake.
