Valve Clearance: Adjustments
Valve Clearance Adjustment
Check hot engine torque on cylinder head bolts before performing valve adjustments.

INTAKE & EXHAUST VALVES
On models equipped with jet valves, adjust jet valve clearance prior to adjusting intake valve clearance.
1. Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature, then position piston at TDC on compression stroke.
2. Loosen valve adjuster locknut, then adjust valve clearance by rotating adjusting screw while measuring with a feeler gauge, Figs. 28 and 29.
3. Check valve clearance. Valve clearance should be as specified.
4. Tighten lock nut securely while holding adjusting screw with screwdriver.
