Fig. 9 Shift housing removal.
1. Remove steering column assembly as outlined.
2. On models shown, release shift housing extension from shift housing by inserting screwdriver in slot between housing and extension and turning
screwdriver.
3. On all models, pry out wiring trough retainers, then remove trough.
4. Protect paint using masking tape, back up shift lever retaining pin with deep socket, then drive out retaining pin and remove shift lever. Remove
breakaway capsules from steering column bracket, then mount column in vise, taking care not to damage bracket.
5. Remove 2 screws securing cover to lock housing and the cover.
6. Remove windshield washer/wiper switch.
7. Pull hider up on control stalk and remove 2 screws securing control stalk sleeve to washer/wiper switch, rotate control stalk fully clockwise and
pull control from turn signal switch.
8. Remove turn signal switch and upper bearing retainer screws and the retainer, lift switch up and position aside, then disconnect horn and ignition
key lamp ground wires, as equipped.
9. Remove retaining screw and position ignition key lamp aside.
10. Remove 4 screws securing upper bearing housing to lock housing, steering shaft snap ring and the bearing housing.
11. Remove spring and steering lock plate, then withdraw steering shaft from lower end of column.
12. Remove retaining screw and lift out key warning switch.
13. Remove ignition switch retaining screws, rotate switch 90° and slide switch off actuating rod.
14. Remove screws securing bellcrank and slide bellcrank up in lock housing until it can be disconnected from ignition switch actuating rod.
15. With ignition lock in "lock" position, depress spring retainers and pull lock from column.
16. Pull lock lever and spring assembly straight out of housing.
17. Remove 4 lock housing retaining screws and the lock plate.
18. Rotate lock housing 90° and remove housing from column.
19. On models with floor shifter, remove spring securing shift housing to mast jacket, rubber bumper and the shift housing.
20. On column shift models with plastic shift housing, pull housing from shift tube using tool C-4584 or equivalent, then remove shift tube and
housing extension from lower end of column.
