Cylinder Head Gasket: Service and Repair
Cylinder Head Removal

Right

CAUTION:  Before removing the cylinder heads, allow the engine to cool down to room temperature. Never remove a cylinder head from a hot/warm
engine. The cylinder head may warp.

NOTE:  When removing the cylinder head, the exhaust manifolds must be removed from the cylinder head. Install the exhaust manifolds AFTER the
cylinder head and gasket have been installed.This is to prevent damage to the cylinder head gasket tabs.

RIGHT CYLINDER HEAD REMOVAL (ENGINE INSTALLED)

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System/Service and Repair for procedure.  See: Cooling System/Service and Repair

3. Remove the intake manifold. See Intake Manifold/Service and Repair.  See: Intake Manifold/Service and Repair

4. Remove A/C Pump (if so equipped).
5. Remove the exhaust manifold.
6. Remove the cylinder head cover.
7. Remove the spark plug wires from the cylinder head.
8. Remove the top alternator mounting bracket that bolts to the cylinder head and the timing case cover.
9. Remove the timing case bolts that thread into the cylinder head and those bolts in-line below.

NOTE:  The timing chain and sprocket must be held In place and not allowed to drop down while the cylinder head is removed. If the chain and
sprocket slip, the timing case must be removed and the chain tensioners released.

10. Turn the engine over until the camshaft sprocket dowel is straight up.

11. Attach Tool 7317 to the timing case cover. Secure with two short cylinder head cover bolts. The tool consists of a support bracket and a dummy

bearing Fig. 1.
