Throttle Position Sensor: Adjustments

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

1.

Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and disconnect the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) connector.
NOTE:  The TPS connector terminals are labeled "A", "B" and "C".

Measure the voltage between terminals "B" and "C" of the TPS with a high impedance digital voltmeter.  
CAUTION:  When testing the TPS, insert the tester probes through the back of the connector, making sure that the harness wires are not damaged
by the probes.
If the voltage is not approximately 5 volts, test the vehicle with the scan tool.  Refer to '89 Premier Fuel Injection And Computerized Engine
Controls.

Turn the ignition key OFF and check for continuity between TPS connector terminal "B" and ground.  If the circuit is open, test the vehicle with
the scan tool.

Reconnect the TPS connector and turn the ignition switch ON.

Back probe the TPS connector with a high impedance digital volt meter and measure the voltage between terminal "A" and ground.

If the voltage is not between 0.5 to 1.0 volts, adjust the TPS as follows:

a. Insert the negative lead of the voltmeter into terminal "B" and the positive lead into terminal "A" at the rear of the TPS connector and record

the voltage.

b. Move the voltmeter positive lead from terminal "A" to terminal "C" and record the voltage.
c. Divide the second voltage reading by the first reading.  The resulting value should be between .075 and .085.
d. For a fine sensor adjustment, loosen the sensor rear retaining screw and pivot the sensor.  For a coarse adjustment, loosen the front retaining

screw and pivot the sensor.

7.

If the sensor cannot be adjusted into acceptable range the sensor is defective and must be replaced.  See: Service and Repair
