Rear Defogger Switch: Description and Operation
The switch for the rear window defogger (EBL) system (1) is integrated into the A/C-heater control (2), which is located in the center of the instrument
panel. When the rear window defogger switch is activated, the timing circuit integral to the A/C-heater control operates the rear window defogger (EBL)
relay and the heated mirror relay.
When the relays are activated, current is directed to the rear window defogger and the outside rear view mirror grids. The grids heat the rear window and
rear view mirror glass to help clear the surfaces of fog or frost.
An LED indicator will illuminate when the rear window defogger switch is activated. When the switch is activated, it energizes the timing circuit integral
to the A/C-heater control, which then activates the rear window defogger (EBL) relay and the heated mirror relay. The EBL relay controls the current
flow to the grids of the rear window defogger.
The EBL system will be on for approximately ten minutes or until the rear window defogger switch or the ignition switch is turned off.
The rear window defogger switch and the rear window defogger LED indicator cannot be repaired and, if faulty or damaged, the A/C-heater control must
be replaced.
