THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 18-019-02, DATED JUNE 17, 2002, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED
FROM YOUR FILES. ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDE CHANGES TO THE PROCESS FOR
REPROGRAMMING THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM).
SUBJECT:
Revision of Flash Process for New Engine Control Module (ECM) from Cummins
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO ALL RAM TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH THE 5.9L CUMMINS 24-VALVE DIESEL ENGINE (ETC & ETH
SALES CODES).
DISCUSSION:
Mopar(R) is currently phasing out pre-programmed Cummins Diesel Engine Control Modules (ECM). New modules will no longer be pre-programmed
when received from Mopar(R). Replacement of future ECM's will require programming utilizing the DRBIII(R) and MDS2. 1998-1/2-2002 modules will
cause the "Wait to Start" light to flash, indicating the module has not been programmed.
NOTE:
**EXTREME CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN CHANGING THE CALIBRATION OF AN UNPROGRAMMED ECM. DO NOT RANDOMLY
SELECT A CALIBRATION. IF IN DOUBT, CONTACT THE S.T.A.R. CENTER FOR ASSISTANCE. INSTALLING AN INCORRECT
CALIBRATION INTO AN ECM CAN CAUSE SEVERE ENGINE DAMAGE.**
1.
**If possible, record the old ECM part number through the module info screen.
2.
Install the new ECM.
3.
Install a battery charger and verify battery charge is above 11.5 volts.
4.
Connect the DRBIII(R) and the MDS2 to the vehicle. Verify "DRBIII(R) Status; Connected".
5.
Verify that the VIN displayed on the screen is correct. If the VIN is not displayed or is not correct, manually enter the VIN. Select "OK".
6.
Enter the information requested by the "New Session Setup" window. Select "Ok".
7.
If the old ECM PN is known, proceed to step 10. If the old ECM PN is not known, proceed to step 8.
8.
On the MDS2, select the "History" tab and select "General Information" at the bottom of the screen.
9.
Under the "Equipment" window, identify and record:
a.
Emissions (Federal or California)
b.
Transmission (Automatic, 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual)
10.
Select the "Flash" tab.
11.
Select "Use Currently Selected Vehicle".
12.
Select the proper calibration;
a.
If the old ECM PN is known, locate and select the ECM calibration part number that corresponds to the old ECM part number.
b.
If the old ECM PN is not known, select the correct calibration based on the information that was recorded from "Vehicle History".
