Lift the carpeting in front of the driver's seat to access the heat shield bolt (Figure 7).
9.
Remove and discard the center heat shield bolt near the floor pan transmission tunnel (Figure 7).
10.
Apply the supplied butyl patch over the bolt hole.
11.
Install the carpeting, the kick panel and the door sill trim.
12.
Connect the negative battery cable (if necessary).
13.
Refill the fuel tank, install the filler cap and check for leaks (if necessary).

Safety Recall # 786 -- Heat Shield Bolt and Chassis Fuel Tube

This service requirement applies only to 1998 model year Dodge Ram (BR/BE) trucks equipped with a heavy duty 5.9L V8 or 8.0L V10 engine ("5"
or W" in the 8th VIN position) built at the:

Saltillo Assembly Plant ("G" in the 11th VIN Position) through February 26, 1998 (MDH 022613)
^
St. Louis North Assembly Plant ("J" in the 11th VIN Position) through February 24, 1998 (MDH 022413)
^
Lago Alberto Assembly Plant ("M" in the 11th VIN Position) through February 24, 1998 (MDH 022410)

A heat shield attaching bolt on the above listed vehicles, may contact the chassis fuel tube. To correct this condition, the heat shield attaching bolt
must be removed and the chassis fuel tube must be inspected and replaced, if necessary.
Alternate Transportation:
^
If inspection determines that fuel tube replacement is required and the vehicle must be held overnight, dealers should attempt to minimize customer
inconvenience by placing the owner in a loaner vehicle.
Parts Packages:

Each involved dealer, to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced, will receive enough Butyl Patches to service about 25% of those vehicles.

Five (5) unique fuel tube packages are required for this recall depending upon the vehicle model and wheel base. Refer to the Parts section for
details.

Due to the small number of vehicles expected to require fuel tube replacement, no fuel tubes will be distributed for this recall. DEALERS ARE
REQUESTED TO ORDER PARTS ONLY AFTER INSPECTION HAS DETERMINED THAT FUEL TUBE REPLACEMENT IS REQUIRED.
