Canister Purge Solenoid: Description and Operation
Component Description

PURPOSE

The EVAP purge solenoid is used to regulate the flow vacuum to the charcoal canister. 

OPERATION

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls purge operation, by energizing and de-energizing the EVAP Purge solenoid. 

^ When energized (purge solenoid grounded), vacuum is prevented from reaching the purge switch. 
^ When de-energized, vacuum is applied to the shut off switch. When vacuum is applied to the switch vapors are drawn through the canister,

into the intake manifold, where they are burned during combustion.
