Horn Switch: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

WARNING:  ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN AIR BAG, REFER TO AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELTS/AIR BAGS BEFORE
ATTEMPTING STEERING WHEEL OR STEERING COLUMN COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. FAILURE TO TAKE THE
PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Wait two minutes for the airbag system capacitor to discharge before further service.

Horn Switch Remove/Install

2. From the underside of the steering wheel, remove the screws that secure the speed control switch or trim bar to the steering wheel.
3. Pull the switches or trim bar from the steering wheel. If equipped with speed control, unplug the wire harness connector from the switch.
4. Remove the four nuts that secure the airbag module to the steering wheel.
5. Pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel far enough to unplug the clockspring wire harness connector from the back of the airbag

module.

6. Remove the airbag module from the steering wheel.
7. Remove the two screws that secure the horn switches to the steering wheel.
8. Unplug the horn switch wire harness connectors and remove the horn switches from the steering wheel.
9. Reverse the removal procedures to install. Tighten the airbag module mounting nuts to 9 to 11 Nm (80 to 100 in lb).
