Connect the new fuel tube assembly to the fuel injection pump using the original banjo bolt and washers (Figure 1).
7.
Connect the new fuel tube assembly to the fuel filter assembly using the original banjo bolt and washers (Figure 1).
8.
Tighten both fuel tube banjo bolts to 18 ft-lbs (24 N.m).
NOTE:
Hold the fuel tube in place so that it does not rotate while the banjo bolts are tightened.
9.
Reconnect both negative battery cables.
10.
With the ignition key, bump the starter, but do not start the engine, then wait while the transfer pump runs through its 25 second cycle.
11.
Bump the starter again and allow the transfer pump to run through another 25 second cycle.
12.
Start the engine and run it at 1000-1500 rpm until it runs smoothly.
13.
Check the fuel supply tube connections for leaks.

This service requirement applies only to 1998 model year Dodge Ram (BR/BE) trucks equipped with a 5.9L Cummins Encore 24-valve diesel engine
("6" in the 8th VIN position) built through April 29, 1998 (MDH 0429XX).

The low pressure fuel supply tube on the above listed vehicles, may fracture and leak fuel. To correct this condition, the low pressure fuel supply
tube must be replaced.

Dealers are encouraged to consider alternative scheduling and servicing approaches for this recall. This repair does not require hoists or other full
service facility special equipment and is a CHRYSLER MOBILE SERVICE approved repair.
Parts Packages:

Each involved dealer, to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced, will receive enough Fuel Tubes to service about 25% of those vehicles.

Dear Ram Diesel Truck Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Chrysler Corporation has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1998 Dodge Ram trucks equipped with a 5.9L
Cummins Encore 24-valve diesel engine.
The problem is...
The low pressure fuel tube on your Ram truck (identified on the enclosed form), may crack and leak fuel. This condition creates the potential for an
engine compartment fire, which could be hazardous to vehicle occupants.
What Chrysler and your dealer will do...
Chrysler will repair your Ram truck free of charge (parts and labor). To do this, your dealer will replace the low pressure fuel tube. The work will take
about 1/2 hour to complete. However, additional time may be necessary depending on how dealer appointments are scheduled and processed.
What you must do to ensure your safety...

Simply contact your dealer right away to schedule a service appointment. Ask the dealer to hold the parts for your vehicle or to order them before
your appointment.
