Emissions Maintenance Light: Testing and Inspection
Maintenance Required Indicator
The diagnosis found here addresses an inoperative service reminder (Maintenance Required) indicator lamp condition. If the lamp comes on and stays on
while driving, refer to Powertrain Management/Computer and Control Systems for diagnosis. If required emission control systems maintenance has been
completed, use a DRB scan tool and the proper Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures to reset the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) lamp mileage counter.
If no emission control systems maintenance is past due, the following procedure will help locate a short or open in the indicator lamp circuit.
1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Unplug the PCM wire harness connector C (gray). Remove the instrument cluster bezel and the
message center assembly. Do not unplug the message center wire harness connector.
2. Install a jumper wire between the service reminder indicator lamp driver circuit cavity of the message center wire harness connector and a good
ground. Connect the battery negative cable. Turn the ignition switch to the On position. The lamp should light. If OK, remove the jumper wire and
go to Step 3. If not OK, replace the faulty bulb.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the Off position. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Unplug the message center wire harness connector.
Check for continuity between the service reminder indicator lamp driver circuit cavity of the message center wire harness connector and a good
ground. There should be no continuity. If OK, go to Step 4. If not OK, repair the short circuit as required.
4. Check for continuity between the service reminder indicator lamp driver circuit cavities of the message center wire harness connector and the PCM
wire harness connector C. There should be continuity. If OK, refer to the Powertrain Management/Computer and Control Systems/Powertrain
Diagnostic Procedures for diagnosis of the PCM. If not OK, repair the open circuit as required.
