Fuel Gauge: Testing and Inspection

The diagnosis found here addresses an inoperative gauge condition. If the problem being diagnosed is related to gauge accuracy, be certain to confirm
that the problem is with the gauge or sending unit and not with the fuel tank. Inspect the fuel tank for signs of damage or distortion that could affect the
sending unit performance before you proceed with gauge diagnosis. 

1. Turn the ignition switch to the On position. Unplug the fuel pump module wire harness connector. The connector is located on top of the fuel tank.

The gauge needle should move to the low end of the gauge scale. If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK, go to Step 4.

2. Connect a jumper wire between the sending unit ground circuit cavity and the fuel level sensor signal circuit cavity of the fuel pump module wire

harness connector. The gauge needle should move to the high end of the gauge scale. If OK, refer to the procedures to replace the faulty sending
unit. If not OK, remove the jumper wire and go to Step 3.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the Off position. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Check for continuity between the sending unit

ground circuit cavity of the fuel pump module wire harness connector and a good ground. There should be continuity. If OK, go to Step 4. If not
OK, repair the open circuit to ground as required.

4. Remove the instrument cluster bezel and the cluster assembly. Unplug the instrument cluster printed circuit wire harness connector 1.
5. Probe the fuel level sensor signal circuit cavity of the printed circuit wire harness connector 1. Check for continuity to a good ground. There

should be no continuity If OK, go to Step 6. If not OK, repair the short circuit as required.

6. Check for continuity between the fuel level sensor signal circuit cavities of the printed circuit wire harness connector 1 and the fuel pump module

wire harness connector. There should be continuity If OK, replace the faulty gauge. If not OK, repair the open circuit as required.
