Transmission Cooler: Description and Operation
Operation

DIESEL ENGINES

On all diesel engine models equipped with an automatic transmission, the transmission oil is routed through the air-to-oil transmission oil cooler where
heat is removed from the transmission oil before returning to the transmission. The air-to-oil cooler has an internal thermostat that controls oil flow
through the cooler. When the transmission oil is cold (less then operating temperature), the oil is routed through the cooler bypass. When the
transmission oil reaches operating temperatures and above, the thermostat closes off the bypass allowing the oil to flow through the cooler. The
thermostat is serviceable.

On 5.9L diesel engine models, the transmission oil is routed through the oil-to water transmission oil cooler first, then to the air-to-oil transmission oil
cooler.
