Steering Gear: Adjustments
Sector Shaft Over Center

1. With gear on center, loosen locknut and tighten sector shaft lash adjuster screw.
2. Retighten locknut and measure gear overcenter torque.
3. Rotating torque wrench in a 90° arc on each side of center and note the highest reading.
4. Continue adjusting and checking until overcenter reading is within limits.
5. Overcenter torque of a new gear should show an increase of 4-8 inch lbs. over thrust bearing adjustment, but total must not exceed 18 inch lbs.
6. Overcenter torque of a used gear should be 4-5 inch lbs. increase, but not exceed 18 inch lbs. in total.
